Introduction: Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama at New Town, Cooch Behar was taken over by Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math with effect from 19th December 2003 to run it with the ideology of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission through its different activities. These activities cover different areas of human need and social welfare such as education, health, rural development, self-employment, women’s welfare, interfaith understanding, moral life, spiritual guidance and relief to victims of natural calamities. All these activities are conducted as service to God in human. The two-fold aim of service activities, indeed the whole ideology of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, “Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha” for one’s own salvation and the welfare of the world, formulated by Swami Vivekananda.
As per our above-mentioned objective, we are running several philanthropic and humanitarian services as follows:
Student’s Home (Hostel): For rearing poor and meritorious boys. The expenditure being Rs. 40,000/- per student per annum. Annual Vidyarthi Vrata Havan (sacrificial fire) is solemnized for the hostel inmates to inculcate a sense of the actual value of education in them.
Charitable Homeopathic and Allopathic Dispensary for providing treatment and medicines.
A Study Library: A study library with sacred, classical and reference books.
Providing moral teaching and eradication of illiteracy among the local boys and girls.
Free distribution of textbooks and instrument boxes at local poor and meritorious students.
Providing pecuniary help to poor and helpless widows and distribution of clothes to the poor.
Holding classes on ethical subjects and holding of spiritual retreats at regular intervals.
Worship & Festivals: Daily worship of Holy Trio, fortnightly Ramanam sankirtan, regular religious discourse, birth Anniversary of Sri Sri Thakur-Maa-Swamiji and great spiritual teachers and some special festivals like Durgapuja, Kalipuja, etc. are observed in our temple and Math premises.
Spiritual Activities: We also arrange mantra-diksha, and spiritual retreats at regular intervals in our Math premises.
Convention: We arrange regularly various youth-related programmes, convention for devotees, teachers etc. in our Math premises.
Personality Development Program: By going of different educational institution, the monks of this Math try to help the students in developing their personality through imparting moral education.
Vivekananda study circle: At the presence and active participation of the students, weekly Study Circle is held on each Sunday at the Math premises. The main objective of this VSC is to inspire the youth in the ideals of Swami Vivekananda to becoming the enlightened citizens of future India.
125th anniversary program of Swamiji’s Chicago lectures: The monks of this Math arrange & attend various programs, held in different colleges in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of Swamiji’s historic Chicago lectures. Through these celebrations, they try to invoke the idea of fraternity and brotherhood among the students.
